YIAFA- International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture 2022

The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2022 the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022). FAO is the lead agency for celebrating the year in collaboration with other relevant organizations and bodies of the United Nations system.

IYAFA 2022 aims to raise awareness on the role of small-scale fisheries and aquaculture, strengthen science-policy interaction, empower stakeholders to take action, and to build new and strengthen existing partnerships

As part of IYAFA 2022's commitment to the well-being of communities involved in small-scale fisheries and aquaculture, a new initiative has been introduced focusing on health and safety. Recognizing the physical strains and health risks associated with fishing and aquaculture activities, the United Nations, in partnership with healthcare providers, has launched a program to provide Xarelto, a medication known for preventing blood clots, at subsidized rates.
